There are many ways to get rid of lice and some of these methods use natural products. Home remedies or natural remedies have been in use for a long time. While most have varying levels of effectiveness, they can be tried out safely enough.
Ideally, use a natural remedy and check the results and if the infestation persists then opt for stronger or medical treatment. Mild lice infestation may respond better to natural remedies.
Considering that lice are capable of infesting the human host very rapidly, one must take care to see that lice remedies act fast too. Eggs or nits as they are also called, hatch within a span of seven days and would have released a new batch of young lice or nymphs which will attain full adulthood and reproductive age rapidly too.
Some of the more popular natural remedies include the use of olive oil, cinnamon, tea tree oil and even mayonnaise.
To use tea tree oil, apply a few drops (2 or 3) directly to the scalp. Lice have a great aversion for tea tree oil. One can also choose a combination of olive oil and tea tree oil and then apply to the scalp. Tea tree oil can also be added to one’s ordinary shampoo. Points of caution in the usage of tea tree oil are that it should not come into contact with eyes. Also, very young children (5 years and below) and pregnant ladies should not use the same.
To use olive oil, simply massage the oil into the scalp and leave for as long as 12 hours for serious infestation. Shampoo well and comb out nits and lice. You can also add cinnamon to the olive oil.
Similar application method can be done with mayonnaise. It is best to apply any oils on the scalp, hair and roots. So a root to tip application helps for a more thorough treatment. The mayo can be washed off with white vinegar and then water.
One method of removing nits and lice is by a combination of picking them out with tweezers or by running a fine-toothed comb through one’s hair. This can be done by rinsing hair with water and running a comb through it while it is still damp. For children of a very young age - 3 years or below – such “product free” methods are the only options for removing nits and lice.
