Howler Monkeys Of Costa Rica

Howler monkeys are known for their throaty howls due to which they can be heard from a very large distance. This is probably the only reason they have been named so. Howler monkeys are considered as the loudest among all the New World Monkeys. There are nine such species that fall under the category of howler monkeys.

As far as howler monkeys in Costa Rica are concerned, then it is very important to note that Costa Rica is basically a home for them. These can be found in southern Mexico as well as in South and Central America. These monkeys usually vocalize during the dusk and dawn by passing the air through their specially adopted hyoid bone which is found in their throats. All such vocalizations are basically used for communicating with each other or marking the territories within the troops.

Mantle howlers, which are also called as Mono Congo in this place, can usually weight up to twenty pounds and normally have black fur. They are even noticeable for a golden or brown colored mantle which is formed by their long fur along with their back and flanks. Mantled howler monkeys fall under a species that is being protected by CITES program which is known for preventing the international trading of such species. Though their overall population is not under threat but it is their native habitat that needs security and this is what is being tried. Howler monkeys like any other species play a very vital role in the ecosystem.
