Guava is a tropical fruit and grows best in tropical climates. This fruit has several nutrients that are beneficial for the human body. It even helps in cutting down cholesterol levels. A guava tree can be easily identified by its smooth branches and copper tinge. When you scratch the bark, you will see a greenish layer underneath.
The tree has a fewer leaves and overall a bony structure. The trunk has a diameter of around ten inches only. The leaves of the guava tree are aromatic and you can smell the aroma by crushing the leaf.
The fruits have a strong odor, especially when ripe. Initially, the fruits are stiff and sturdy, and are green in color. When they are cut open, they have white flesh with tiny seeds in it. A ripened fruit is bright yellow in color and has a pink flesh with seeds inside them. A guava can be consumed when it is raw or ripe. The guava is identical to the pear when it is fully grown. A ripened guava fruit will have several seeds in them. One fruit can have as many as 535 seeds in it. When the fruit is immature and slightly before ripening, it is hard and green. It is gummy inside, and severely astringent.
The guava tree seeds are spread by birds and are also grown by man. It is common to areas like Mexico and Central America. It grows in all warm and tropical climates. People from the West Indies, Bermuda, Florida and the Bahamas have been growing for several years now. Soldiers from Spain and Portugal soldiers were responsible for transporting the fruit to Guam and East Indies from the New World. It was also adopted in Asia and Africa. Egyptians have been growing it for several ages and also spread the fruit to Palestine. It is sometimes seen in Mediterranean regions, coastal areas of France and Algeria. India cultivates the highest amount of guavas and yields 27,319 tons every year.
Guava arrived in Hawaii only in the 18th century. Now, it is commonly found in Pacific islands and is grown in groves. It can be grown in backyards of our home and since it does not become very tall and huge, it is ideal for home growing. Guava grows wild in several parts of India and the West Indies. It does not need a lot of care and can grow in any soil conditions as long as the weather is warm.
