Hedges in the garden serve two purposes. Firstly, they provide some amount of privacy to your house and secondly, they add to the beauty of your garden. A well and neatly done up hedge immediately attracts everybody’s eyes. Well, neatly trimmed hedge looks good no doubt, but it requires regular trimming. There are many people who prefer to use pruning shears for trimming hedges. However, this is a tedious and time consuming method. Instead, it would be better to use a hedge trimmer for good results.
Those who have been using the hedge trimmer would soon realize that after repeated use, the blades tend to become blunt. You can make it out once you see unclean marks on the stems. With a blunt blade, the trimming becomes even more tedious and time consuming. Therefore, it is essential to keep sharpening the blade on a regular basis. Do not think of buying a new one every time the blade becomes blunt. Sharpening the blade is not that a difficult thing to do.
You have to invest some time if you want to sharpen your hedge trimmer. So, sit one day comfortably in a place where you have access to a flat surface. Carry a pair of pliers for your convenience and a metal filer of the same length as that of the blade. You may like to wear safety gloves and goggles if you wish to. With the help of the pliers unscrew the bolts that attach the blade to the trimmer. Take out each blade and file it thoroughly with the metal filer. While filing, do it from the tip to the bottom of the blade. Follow the same process for all the blades. Once you are done with it, test the blade for its sharpness by applying it on a piece of paper. If the blade slices the paper with no difficulty, then you can place the blade back in its original position. You should do this quite often to maintain your hedge trimmer for long.
