There are many people who think that by putting duct tape all around the handle will get it working for some more days. It can, however it would be dangerous to do that. Therefore, it is advisable to replace the handle when you notice any cracks in it.

To replace the handle, first carefully observe the handle. Measure its length and check for its grain track. Most of the older versions of shovels have their heads riveted in place for giving more firmness. The newer versions have screw onto the head. For the shovels, where the handle screws onto the head, you can buy a handle having a ridged end and then easily screw the same into the shovel socket. For the shovels, which are not like this, you have to buy a new handle from a hardware store, and get it cut to an appropriate length.

Now, with the help of a grinder drill grind the heads of the rivets which keep the broken shovel handle in the socket of the shovel located at the head. Put a punch and with a hammer drive it away from the channel that is prepared by the socket head and broken handle. Pull out the broken handle from the shovel head. Now, taper the end of the shovel hand to a point in a manner that it fits well inside the socket of the shovel head. The end of the shovel head must be tapped. Drill pilot holes of one fourth of an inch into the handles and drive wood screws into these holes.
