Any practice of healing that is different from conventional medical healing methods is known as alternative medicine. In fact, many of the popular healing practices being followed today belong to the alternative medicine category. Some of these practices are traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, ayurveda, hypnosis, acupuncture, herbal treatments and yoga.
Alternative medicine practices are also known as CAM or complementary alternative medicine.
Alternative medicine became increasingly popular in the 1990s especially for medical conditions which could not be treated by conventional medicine or allopathy, as it is normally called. Some of the people who had terminal diseases or conditions started shifting to alternative medicine and found relief and in some cases, cure. This is when alternative medicine became extremely popular and sought after.
In addition, patients were looking for sympathetic doctors who would be able to understand them and treat them as a whole. This is what alternative medicine was able to provide, unlike conventional medicine. Doctors from alternative medicine regard patients as a whole; they take into consideration mind, body and soul and each treatment method is individually adapted to the patient.
Another reason for the alternative medicine's popularity in the 1990s was the no-side effect maxim adopted by CAM doctors. Yes, it is a fact that alternative medicines have no side effects unlike conventional medicines and this is a boon for many people. In fact, alternative medicines cure the body through natural methods and many of these methods are based on the belief that mind and body are inseparable and therefore, should be treated together or as one.
