Stem Cell Therapy for DiabetesDiabetes is a disease which causes a patient to have high level of sugar in bloodstream, because the body fails to produce insulin or respond to produced insulin. Diabetes is classified into three categories: Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and Gestational diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the patient’s body does not produce insurance. Insulin injection is needed.
Type 2 diabetes is probably the most common type of diabetes. Cells do not react to insulin properly. A variety of drugs are used to improve glucose production and insulin sensitivity in the early stage of the disease. As the disease advances, it can lead to other serious complications like blindness.
Gestational diabetes is the condition where pregnant women may have high level of glucose during her pregnancy. Approximately, 2-5 % of all pregnant women may develop this condition, and it usually go away after delivery.
Currently, there is no cure for diabetes. The only available treatment now is the insulin injection. Diet and exercise is also recommended to control the level of sugar in bloodstream. However, recent studies have shown that stem cell therapy may potentially cure diabetes. In a clinical study, patients with type 1 diabetes were given transfusions of stem cells and drugs to suppress the immune system. The results show that their body start producing insulin again. Although there are more research that need to be done, scientists say that this treatment may be widely available within 5-8 years from now.
