The future of longevity has long fascinated people and researchers, who have been looking for ways to extend life. The US Census Bureau contends that life expectancy in the US will reach somewhere near mid-80s around 2050 from the current 77.85 years. Thereafter it is expected that longevity will reach a plateau, with life expectancy reaching low 90s.
The Future of Longevity
According to the UN, by the time 2300 comes, developed nations will be leading in longevity, with people reaching ages between hundred and hundred and six years. However, this trend will continue, but the process will be slow and steady. So, it is quite possible that after 2300 people will be living beyond 106 years in developed nations. On the other hand, developing nations will also show an increase in longevity, but this will still be lower than developed nations.
However, it is important to remember that these are just predictions based on current circumstances. With technology and science constantly changing and evolving, it is quite possible that the future of longevity will be quite different from what is being predicted today. If medical science improves in all countries, including poor countries, then future of longevity across the globe will be quite different from what is envisaged today.
Today, people are more conscious about their health. As a result, chronic diseases, like diabetes, elevated blood pressure, heart disease and obesity, may end up slowing down in the future. However, if people show more interest in changing their lifestyle habits, it is quite possible that these lifestyle diseases may end up reversing. This will have an impact on the longevity of a person.
What Does Research Show about Future of Longevity?
Jay Olshansky, a researcher of life expectancy, has found evidence that mortality rate among adults, kids and infants has decreased substantially. Hence, this has helped life expectancy to increase. He contends that the increase in life expectancy that is prevalent today is primarily due to better rate of survival among children and younger adults. However, he also claims that life expectancy will not go beyond 85 years.
Women have always had better life expectancy compared to men. However, this gap is being bridged in several nations. There are some researchers who claim that human longevity has still not reached its limits, as living standards and medical science are constantly improving. Hence, this will ensure that life expectancy for humans will continue to grow.
There are some researchers, who believe that molecular nanotechnology will play a major role in extending longevity of people. Research is still ongoing in this field, but laboratory tests on mice have shown that there could be a possibility of increasing longevity some time in the future.
What do Futurists Say?
There are futurists, like Ray Kurzweil, who believe that taking supplements every day, doing regular exercise and eating healthily can have an effect on a person’s longevity. If the person follows the right strategy, they can end up living forever. These beliefs are based on the fact that medical science and technology has advanced tremendously. Today, people have better access to healthcare. Hence, this has helped people live longer. Futurists claim that medical science will be able to understand human biology very well in the future. Hence, it will have the ability to repair the body just like we repair cars and homes to increase their life span. So there will be no limit on longevity and people will be able to live indefinitely.
