Body image basically refers to what we perceive about our own appearance and body. It also indicates the depth to which we are connected to our physical appearance. There are a number of reasons behind this self-consciousness and over-awareness about our body and looks. Constantly we all feel pressurized about whether we are looking slim or not, what the other people might be thinking about us, how we are being perceived by the society surrounding us, etc.
Whether we accept it or not, body image features in the list of our priorities at some point of our lives. This may be due to the society we live in and their demands about the ideal body type. Also, various comments (and compliments) from our friends and family also affect the way we perceive our individual body image. This gives rise to our tendency or constantly comparing our body with others close to us.
If one is not happy with his or her body image, he or she can develop distorted perception of shapes and sizes. That may lead to feelings of shame, anxiety and awkwardness. Also, in order to attain the ideal body image, one may also succumb to eating disorder like anorexia and bulimia and mental disorder like acute depression and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.
Again, a free and clear mind can form a positive body image in our mind. It is important for everyone to learn to be happy and content with the kind of body they are blessed with. That way, we would not have to run after the so-called perfect bodies that are showcased everywhere and then the term “body image” would not be considered as such a big issue.
