Medically, high blood pressure is referred to as hypertension. This condition occurs when the force via which the blood is pushed through the arteries is too high. On the other hand, high cholesterol occurs when the levels of blood cholesterol are too high. In both, the person may or may not have symptoms and both increase the chances of getting heart disease. Also, it maybe important to note that both, high blood pressure and cholesterol, can be brought under control through good lifestyle habits.
Many people want to know whether high blood pressure can cause high cholesterol. The answer to this is no. However, when a person has high blood pressure, the chances of having cholesterol sticking to the walls of the arteries increase. When this happens, the arteries tend to harden, resulting in atherosclerosis. Also, having high levels of cholesterol in the blood can also result in atherosclerosis.
While elevated blood pressure is not responsible for producing more blood cholesterol, it can cause more of the blood cholesterol to end up as plaque formation on the arterial walls. When a person has high pressure, the blood is pushed too much in the arteries. This results in the arterial walls to get damaged as they sustain minute tears. When these tears heal, they form scar tissue. So, when the blood is pushed through the arteries, these scar tissues tend to trap more material present in the blood, with cholesterol being one of those. As a result, this causes the cholesterol to adhere to the arterial walls resulting in the formation of plaque. As more and more plaque accumulates along the arterial walls, the arteries become narrow. This, in turn, causes the blood to use more force while traveling through the blood vessels. Also, the heart has to pump harder to ensure that the blood is pushed through the narrowed arteries. Hence, it has an adverse effect not just on the arteries, but also on the heart.
You can control both elevated blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels by ensuring that you consume a heart healthy diet. This means eating a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, legumes, seeds and nuts. The person should be looking to reduce their intake of salt, processed food and also saturated fats. Also, doing regular exercise will help to bring down the cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
So, now you know that high blood pressure cannot cause cholesterol. However, both conditions are closely linked.
