When a person goes to a higher altitude, he or she will experiences changes in the respiratory rate. In fact, many people want to know will respiratory rate decrease with a higher altitude. Unfortunately, this does not happen. As a matter of fact, the respiratory rate tends to increase with a higher altitude.
Usually, when a person goes to a higher altitude, the body has to get acclimatized. This occurs gradually, with some people acclimatizing quickly, whereas others never acclimatize no matter how long they stay in the higher altitude. Generally, eighty percent of the acclimatization of the body occurs in ten days, while ninety-five percent of the acclimatizing occurs in 6 weeks. Within 1 week of staying the higher altitude, a person will notice that his or her respiration rate increases. Thereafter, in the next few months, the respiratory rate will gradually decline. However, even this reduction of the respiratory rate is higher than what the person had at a lower altitude.
In the early days at a higher altitude, the person will notice not only fast rate of respiration, but also an increase in the heart rate. However, after ten days, of acclimatizing, the rate at which the heart beats reduces.
The number of RBCs tends to increase as the person continues staying at the higher altitude. Once this increase occurs, the rate of respiration gradually decreases, but as mentioned earlier, it will still be higher than what it was originally.
The reason for the increase in the rate of respiration is the less volume of oxygen is reaching the lungs. Hence, within a few hours of the person reaching high altitude, there will be a noticeable increase in the respiration rate.
