Chinese Pregnancy Calendar

Once the question, 'Am I pregnant?' has been answered with a positive, the next most thrilling question that comes to the mind of the parents to be is 'What will it be, a boy or girl?' .

Some try hard to lure the obstetrician into letting the secret out, while others try their luck with quizzes or nanny’s myths such as evaluating the shape of the stomach and types of cravings; and associating them to the gender of the unborn. There are others who hold on to their anxiety and choose to wait for the D-day to know more about their precious one. The Chinese pregnancy calendar is one of the most widely used instruments to deduce the gender of the unborn child.

The Chinese pregnancy calendar was excavated from a tomb near Beijing. At the time of its discovery, the calendar was inscribed on a tablet and was dated back to 700 years. The original calendar can be seen even today at the Institute of Science in Peking. This calendar is reported to predict the gender of an unborn child with an accuracy record of 97 percent. The calendar utilizes the age of the mother at the time of conception and the month of conception to make the prediction. The first column on the left of the calendar displays the age of a lady from 18 to 45 years and the first row on top gives the 12 months of the year. All the rest of the columns and rows are marked with either a capital M or F signifying male and female. An expectant mother needs to match her age at conception with the month of conception to conclude the gender.

There have been many discussions on the reasons behind the invention of this calendar. The most convincing argument comes in the form of the desire to produce a male child. Many of the ancient civilizations and some cultures even today, give preference to a male child as the legal heir. Keeping this as an objective, in those days people might have chosen the right month of copulation in order to give birth to a male child. However, with changing times, mind sets have also undergone a transformation. Today, most parents welcome a female child as much as a male child. A child is precious irrespective of the sex; the only thing that matters is the health of the new born.

Although many people all over the world invest a lot of time on the Chinese calendar either while planning a child or just to quench their curiosity on pregnancy, but we need to remember that this calendar is not 100 percent accurate. In fact, there is no scientific evidence in support of the accuracy of the calendar. Therefore, the results should not be taken to heart.
