Emotional Changes After Childbirth

Childbirth is a life giving process by itself according to some of the traditions. When a woman gives birth she gets a new birth herself. However, due to new modern medicine the deaths caused due to childbirth have reduced substantially. However, when a woman is pregnant, she goes through several physical and emotional changes.

Childbirth itself is an emotional process because during pregnancy certain hormones in the woman’s body are higher than normal. Hormones like estrogen can play havoc with the nervous system and often cause mood changes in a woman. Also, at the same time after childbirth there are other hormones which come into play for promoting breast milk and stuff. When these hormones become excessive in nature, they can create a lot of tension within a woman’s body. They go through depression and stress because of the hormones.

Some women become over reactive and emotional. Even the slightest of comments can hurt them deeply and lead them to cry. Prenatal and post natal depression is not permanent changes in a woman, but they do cause a lot of mental confusion for a woman. Women may feel extra sensitive about their weight gain and also because they are so preoccupied with the baby, they may feel they are not wanted by their spouses anymore. Even good marital relationships go through stress and strain during childbirth for women. It is not anybody’s fault. Rather it should be seen as nature taking its course. However, after a period of nine months or so everything tends to return to normal after childbirth.
