The first trimester is the first three months of pregnancy. It means tit lasts for three months and it is counted since the day the last menstruation cycle stopped. Usually, the exact period of the first trimester is difficult to calculate because a woman could have become pregnant any time during the gap between two menstruation cycles. Also, during the 1st trimester no scans or ultrasounds are taken because it may be harmful for the baby. That is why 1st trimester is considered as the most delicate period of the baby’s life time.

Also, most women realize they are pregnant only after a few weeks of the 1st trimester are over. That is because they would still not have realized that they missed their periods yet. In addition, the 1st trimester starts showing mild symptoms of pregnancy like morning sickness, or head aches and nausea. Women also start feeling weak in some cases. All these symptoms are caused by the changing hormone levels of the body. Some women develop a keen sense of smell and taste during the 1st trimester.

The presence of pregnancy is confirmed through a blood test and urine test as well during the first trimester. At this time, the health of the mother is established and the doctor also immediately starts the mother on prenatal vitamins. Folic acid and some B vitamins are very important for the baby and the mother during this time. Calcium is also very important so the doctor may prescribe calcium at this time period.
