Pregnancy for a woman lasts for 9 months and 9 days. So, it is technically 37 weeks. However, that is not the thumb rule because there have been pregnancies that have lasted up to 40 weeks also. This time extension mainly takes place because nobody can calculate the exact date when the fetus was born. It is only an approximate or an estimate as to when the pregnancy could have occurred.
A woman can become pregnant at anytime after her last menstruation day top the next menstruation day that was supposed to occur. So, there is actually four weeks time and the pregnancy could have occurred at any time during these four weeks.
The first three months or the 12 weeks of the pregnancy is called the first trimester. The 2nd trimester starts from the 13 the week and goes on till the 24 the week of the pregnancy. So, the second set of 3 months, or in other words, the beginning of fourth month to the end of the sixth month is called the second trimester. In this trimester, most women start gaining weight because their appetite has improved. They also achieve major milestones in pregnancy like the baby starts moving and the sex of the bay is determined in this trimester.
So, there is a lot to look forward to in the 2nd trimester for the parents of the baby. Most of the baby’s organs are developed now, and even in the ultrasound scan, the baby begins to show clearly.
