IT And Legislation In The UK

Taxation in the UK would involve paying at two levels of government. One is to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, and the other is to the local government. The central government draws its income from the policies such as income tax, insurance, value added tax (VAT), fuel duty etc.

Local governments take in their share from such services as parking, business, council tax etc. Apart from income tax, personal taxes include inheritance tax and council tax. Sales taxes and duties include VAT, excise duties, stamp duty and motoring taxation. Business tax is also included with corporation tax. Some other taxes are national insurance contributions and capital gains tax.

The tax year runs from 6 April in one year to 5 April in the next year. In the UK, there is a limit above which people have to pay income tax. In other words, until that limit, the income is exempt from taxes. Thereafter, there are three different rates depending on the amount of income generated.

The United Kingdom legislation draws from a number of varied sources. The United Kingdom does not have a single unique body of legislation. It is divided into three states: England and Wales (English law), Scotland (Scot law), and Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland law). Each state has its own laws and legal system.

The British Parliament has two houses -- the upper house is called the House of the Lords, and the lower house is called the House of the Commons. The Scottish Parliament is a unicameral system of legislature. It is known informally as the Holyrood. The Parliament consists of 129 elected members. The Welsh assembly consists of 60 members, who are elected once in four years and are called Assembly Members or AMs.

The legislation in the UK is, thus, spread out across these assemblies.
