Acupuncture Risks

Any kind of treatment, whether it is good or bad, comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Acupuncture is a method of treatment which follows usage of acupuncture needs which are inserted just beneath the skin at specified points to provide relief.

Adverse effects of acupuncture are rarely reported and until today, there have been very few, which can actually be considered as accidents. The most common problem with acupuncture is that if the person fails to remove the needles that were put on pressure points, it could become a severe problem. As such there are no side effects from the procedure. Acupuncture does not follow the usage of any medicines and there are no prescriptions involved.

In the United States, there have been reports of incidents of various levels of seriousness. Sometimes it is possible in cases where the needles that were put as a part of the treatment end up harming the patient like causing severe infections or puncture of the organ. Infections occur when the needles are not sterilized after every use. These kinds of incidents are not outside the range of possibility as they have been reported earlier. The main reasons for such accidents and incidents are that the practitioner was negligent and poor techniques were followed while inserting the acupuncture needles. Negligence and carelessness can cost a patient dearly and to ensure this does not happen, a patient must check the credibility of the institution and/or practitioner before getting any treatment. People should conduct a thorough research before approaching an alternative therapy institution.
