Chelation is a process in which some chemical substances are used that has the ability to bind with other metals that are flowing in the bloodstream. This therapy has been in use for last one decade. It has been significantly used in detoxification of heavy metal poisoning. It was first introduced in the Navy for treating soldiers who were affected with lead poisoning.
The most readily used ingredient in chelation therapy is a manmade complex amino acid called EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid). EDTA is capable of removing heavy metals and minerals from the body. The metals that can be removed are lead, calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, cadmium etc.
Researchers are trying to find out that whether this method could be used to treat the problems related to the circulation of the blood. Although the FDA has not completely approved the use of chelation therapy for treating blood circulation related disease like arteriosclerosis, the medical community believes that it can be used to remove calcium deposits in the arteries. This technique is gaining popularity, although it is still not approved.
The various clinical conditions that can be treated are circulatory disorders like coronary artery disease, angina and gangrene. The treatment starts initially with few blood investigations like blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar and the function of kidney. After ascertaining the reports of these investigations, chelation therapy is actually started. The therapy would vary as per the clinical reports. In this therapy, EDTA is administrated inside the blood stream through intravenous injections.
