For many years, medical practitioners believe that the colon cancer can only be treated with three basic methods, namely surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. All these methods do give relief from colon cancer, but have associated side effects also. Of late, researchers are eyeing traditional Chinese medicines as an additional method to treat colon cancer.
Studies of various patients have revealed that in preoperative cases, traditional Chinese medicine has provided considerable amount of relief from intestinal obstruction. In post operative cases, traditional Chinese medicine applications have resulted in reduced ileus and urinary retention after the surgery of rectum. The use of traditional Chinese medicine along with the chemotherapy has shown good results in curing chemotherapy related complication called enterocolitis.
The need of the hour is that traditional Chinese medicine practitioners must work along with the cancer treating surgeons to come to an accord, so that a solution can be found for successfully treating colon cancer without any side effects. The reports that have come up so far suggest that traditional Chinese medicine compounds have the ability to diminish tumor cell propagation and stimulate apoptosis. But what it lacks is the correct treatment scheme and the uncertainty of its consistency, strength and relevance.
The chemotherapy medicines have been found to be extremely toxic for example the synthetic IL-2 has serious side effects. However, the administration of a herb called Astragalus with combination of synthetic IL-2 resulted in growth of white blood cells. Hence, it is quite evident that a mixture of the conventional and traditional method used by Chinese practitioners could prove to be very useful in treating colon cancer.
