How Are The Endocrine And Respiratory System Dependent ?

No system in the body can exist isolated. All systems, be endocrine system or respiratory, are dependent on one another for proper and efficient functioning. It is also seen that certain organs, at times, overlap in different systems. Together, the different systems in the body interact with one another, and with the surroundings so that we are hale and hearty.

The respiratory system consists of the nose, mouth, pharynx, epiglottis, trachea, larynx, bronchi and lungs. The respiratory system is responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide from the body. The oxygen is then transported to different parts of the body through the circulatory system.

The endocrine system is made up of ductless glands. The glands that make up this system are the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, pineal, and gonads.

Both the endocrine and respiratory systems are dependent on each other. For example, there are certain hormones like adrenalin, which is released by the adrenals, that help to stimulate the respiratory activity. Also, some endocrine hormones have an effect on the dilation of the alveoli, or the respiratory passages. This can affect the amount of oxygen that the lungs absorb.

The respiratory system also has an effect on the endocrine system. For example, the capillaries present in the lungs are responsible for altering a hormone known as angiotensin. This hormone is responsible for constricting blood vessels and increasing the blood pressure. Angiotensin is also responsible for stimulating the adrenals to secrete aldosterone to promote sodium retention in the kidneys. This, in turn, increases the blood pressure.
