What Might Happen If Your Body Lacked Neurotransmitters ?

The chemical working of the brain is dependent on neurotransmitters. Imagine what would happened if your body lacked neurotransmitters? The thought is unimaginable. It would wreak havoc in the body, as the brain and the nervous system would not be able to function at all.

Neurotransmitters are bio-chemical messengers that facilitate the conveyance of information from one neuron to the next. The neurotransmitters can work as a stimulant or a depressant. Every single nerve cell gets information via the dendrite and the information is passed on to the next cell via the axon after the information jumps through the synaptic gap. It is in this gap that the neurotransmitters are present.

Dendrites have special receptors that are shaped in such a way that each type can receive just a particular kind of neurotransmitter. If the neurotransmitter is excitatory in nature, the cell fires up; and when the neurotransmitter is inhibitory in nature, the cell does not fire up. If neurotransmitters of any kind are missing, the nerve cell will not be able to function. Basically, what it means is that when the body lacks neurotransmitters, it will cause maladaptive behavior.

The brain manufactures its own neurotransmitters dependent on what it needs, as long as the nutrients for making the neurotransmitters are available. For this to happen, it is imperative that a person eats a healthy diet containing all the nutrients that the brain requires. A person should be looking to eat foods that are rich in amino acids. Such foods consist of fish, milk, turkey and cheese. However, it is also important to note that the production of neurotransmitters can be affected by anxiety, stress, pollution, or using illicit or prescription drugs.

Also, it is important to note that the various neurotransmitters in the brain are dependent on one another. So, if one neurotransmitter is lacking or its level is low, it will have an adverse effect on other neurotransmitters.

When neurotransmitters are lacking in the body, it adversely affects a person. The person will suffer from mood imbalance and behavior, which are governed by a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Low levels of serotonin results in feeling sad, depressed, anxious and suffering from compulsive behaviors.

If the levels of dopamine, which is another neurotransmitter, are low, it will make the person feel less motivated and also as though they do not have any energy. When this neurotransmitter is lacking, the body is unable to recover from daily stress and that is why the person feels lethargic and lacks energy. Lack of dopamine even affects a person's sense of smell, sight and sound. As a result the person is enveloped in a brain fog and is unable to concentrate on things.

If a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) is missing, the brain will always stay in an excited state and the person will suffer from sleep problems. This neurotransmitter is responsible for relaxing a person and bringing about sleep. It is also used in the production of growth hormone, muscle growth and production of fat cells. When human growth hormone is reduced in the body, sleep patterns are adversely affected.

Noradrenaline and adrenaline are other neurotransmitters that help to control attention, memory, mental focus, cognition and learning. When these neurotransmitters are lacking, it can result in memory problems and lack of concentration. Noradrenaline lack can also alter the sleep pattern and make the person less alert.

Neurotransmitters are also responsible for controlling pain and relaying pain-related messages to the brain. For instance, when tissue gets injured, the neurotransmitters are secreted non-stop and that is why a person feels pain until the tissue is healed. Neurotransmitters basically inform the body when to slow down when it is hurt or sick. Without neurotransmitters the body will not know and continue functioning, without giving itself a chance to heal.
