The necessity of high calcium level is very important to smoothen out the flow of air in our lungs. Calcium is known to facilitate contractions of the smooth muscles. These muscles are used during the process of respiration. Basically, the cells of the lungs have calcium receptors, and this allows the calcium from the blood to enter the lungs. When this happens, it helps the lungs to constrict, thereby ensuring that fresh supply of oxygen is taken in and the bad air from the lungs is expelled out.

In addition, calcium is also important for respiration at cellular levels. At cellular level, calcium makes the fluids in the cells mildly alkaline. This ensures that there is sufficient amount of oxygen for the Krebs cycle to take place. As a result, this prevents the build of lactic acid in the cells.

Calcium is an important ion that helps to regulate the pH of the cells of lungs and other parts of the body. It is also responsible for being a carrier for the important nutrients to enter the cells. Without sufficient amount of calcium in the body, there will not only be a dearth of nutrients in the cells, but also it will affect cellular respiration and the respiratory system.
