How Does External Temperature Affect The Respiratory System ?

External temperature has direct and consequential effects on our respiratory system. There are many factors that indirectly contribute to the proper functioning of the respiratory system. These factors include good quality of air, proper diet, cleanliness of the system and proper exercise.

These are some of the basic measures that one can take to keep the respiratory system functioning in a proper manner.

Among these factors, the temperature is one of the most important of all. It is common to sweat when there is a lot of heat around us. During such situations, the lungs begin to expand much more than usual because of the heat, and start pumping more air at a time. This is followed by the heart pumping more blood in the body to excrete impurities from the body in the form of sweat. That is why in summer time one gets easily tired, and out of breath because the body is excreting out water and the lungs expanded to cope with the situation. This makes us need more water to drink to function at a normal pace.

Similarly, when one is in a cold environment, there is a need to be warm. There is immediate warmth that is created in our breath and we begin to exhale more. This is caused because our lungs begin to contract in trying to expel air. As is common knowledge that exhalation causes one to feel warm.

In this way, our body intelligently reacts to the surrounding temperatures of our environment.
