The birthmark is a blemish on the skin formed before birth. Nearly one in ten babies has vascular birthmarks. The exact cause of birthmarks is not known but they are not hereditary.
An interesting theory was proposed by Dr. Ian Stevenson, professor of psychiatry at the University of Virginia linking birthmarks and birth defects with reincarnation.
He has done extensive study of cases where the child remembers its previous birth and is able to provide many details. He has done his research in Africa, Alaska, British Columbia, Burma, India, South America, Lebanon and Turkey. He had studied 895 cases and birthmarks and birth defects in 309 cases were found to be linked to the previous births. Some children are able to remember their previous lives in great detail and are able to reveal certain incidents that took place which have a direct bearing on the birthmark or birth defect that is observed in the present life.
There were cases of violent deaths and the postmortem reports of those bodies give details of the wound and its location. The birthmark and the birth defect that is noticed in the child is in the exact location of the wound in the dead person with whom the child is trying to identify with. The birthmarks are found in identical locations in 88 percent of the cases where postmortem reports are available. There are many cases where more than one birth mark is present and all correspond to the wounds recorded in the postmortem report. Many of these birthmarks are unusual types and don’t correspond to any recognizable pattern. The study published by Dr. Ian Stevenson gives an altogether different direction and meaning to birthmarks that are unusual in nature.
