Family planning as the name implies it planning when to have children and how to space them. Spacing children is necessary to ensure that the parents are not taxed unduly in financial, physical and emotional terms.
With proper spacing, each child in a family will be assured of equal attention, which is very important to a growing child going through an impressionable age. But family planning is not solely about that. It also addresses the sexual health of the male and female, especially the latter.
Another facet of family planning is to spread the awareness of contraceptives and the various methods available. In today’s world promiscuity has come to stay and is a fact that has to be accepted. Pre-marital sex no longer carries the stigma of yesteryear. The single mother is not a disgraced rarity to be shunned. The age of initiation into sexual activity is declining and with it so are a host of unwanted consequences. Though a single mother is not frowned upon, it is not encouraged. Raising a child single-handedly has its own difficulties and perils.
Another aspect is that the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases is steadily on the rise along with the dreaded HIV. The governments of most countries in the world are hurriedly taking proactive measures to counteract teen sex and combat the spread of sexually transmitted disease. This is where family planning has an important and additional role to play. Family planning associations are there to educate people into the pitfalls of casual and unprotected sex and provide them with the means to combat this.
