Dental Health And The Elderly

Taking care of dental health is of paramount importance to everyone and more so, the elderly. They need to receive the best in everyday life. It is best that the techniques are mastered by their caretakers. The following are some tips which can be followed.

The elderly are sensitive about having their head or mouth touched. Do it slowly and explain what you are going to do. Speak in a gentle voice and put them at ease when brushing or flossing their teeth. Use a soft bristle toothbrush. Brush their teeth with a gentle circular massaging motion. Replace the brush every three months. Avoid brushing the tongue. Scrape it with a tongue scraper to remove debris and bacteria. The toothbrush could also be strapped to their hands to give them independence and importance. An automatic toothbrush could also be used.

Flossing tips are quite important as well. If you are not used to it, try the automatic flosser. Initially the gums may be sore and bleed, but this will soon pass. Always remember to floss behind the last tooth in the mouth. It removes food particles and debris where no brush can reach. While these chores are performed on them, distract them by putting on TV or radio.

There are tips on dentures as well. Before putting on dentures in the morning, the gums and roof of the mouth must be gently brushed with toothpaste to remove plaque. The dentures are to be cleaned everyday. Any denture chipped, cracked or broken should be professionally repaired by the dentist. Make sure that the dentures fit properly; as they bring about painful sores in their mouths.

If these tips are followed, you can be sure about good oral hygiene among the elderly.
