Chronic bad breath is worrying to anyone who suffers from it. The causes are several and there are solutions to bad breath or halitosis. Poor dental hygiene, throat infections and other things can leave you with a foul mouth odor. Your gums, mouth, infected teeth and tongue can also give you halitosis. There are a few things that we can do to get rid if it.
Some dentists use a breath monitor called a balimeter to find out if you have bad breath. A balimeter measures the amount of sulphur compounds that exist in your breath. Sulphur compounds emit a foul odor.
The following are causes and remedies of bad breath:
- Bad Breath caused by a Post Nasal Drip: The dorsum is the area at the back of your tongue. The discharge on it is caused by a mucous drip from the back of the nose. If the discharge remains there for some time, it has an offensive odor. Gargling with a good mouthwash helps. Clean your tongue well. Use a tongue scraper.
- Bad Breath caused by Sinusitis: Sinusitis or any bacterial infection of the nasal passages or throat, a blockage could be the root of the problem. Contact a Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and get treated.
- Bad Breath caused by Dry Mouth: Antihistamines or decongestants can lead to insufficient saliva from the mouth. This is called xerostomia or dry mouth. This can cause bad breath since it acts as a cleanser and lubricator. Chewing gum helps as it gets the saliva activated. Frequently sip water and have the mouth kept moist and clean.
