Bone grafting is a process that is undertaken in dental surgeries while placing a dental implant. A bone graft becomes necessary if the dental surgeon feels that the jaw bone cannot take the drilling and may fracture or develop cracks.

To place a dental implant, the surgeon will have to drill holes into the jaw and put in screws so that the implant can stay there successfully.The jaw bone is actually very strong and also, it is protecting the teeth on the top by holding them firm in their place, and also the nerves under them connecting the various parts of the face and body.

A dental surgeon first takes X-rays of the jaw bone to determine its strength and the bone density to see if it can take the drilling. In case it is not capable, then the dentist would recommend a bone graft. Bone grafting means taking an external bone from the persons own body or from animals or from some other donor, and placing it in the jaw. After the bone adjusts, the dental implant is placed.

The dental implant can be made with several materials like ceramic, porcelain, nickel, gold alloy, and chrome. However, a titanium mesh or filter has been found to be the most effective in osseointegration. In several experiments, it was found that when the jaw bone grew, it completely integrated with the titanium filter. In every bone graft surgery, the integration is the biggest challenge. However, this integration appears to happen without problems when titanium filters are used.
