Know about Massive Heart Attacks

Massive heart attack is often a misnomer used to describe sudden death caused due to a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart muscle or the myocardium is stopped or reduced. Cardiovascular diseases like heart attack are the leading cause of death in western countries. In the United States itself, around 500,000 people succumb to heart attacks each year.

Coronary arteries are the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle or myocardium. Presence of plaques or blood clots inside the coronary arteries causes an obstruction in the blood supply to the heart resulting in a heart attack. Cholesterol and fatty acids form deposits or plaques on the walls of the blood vessels leading to a condition known as atherosclerosis. When these plaques get disrupted or they burst, lipid deposits are released into the blood circulation, thereby activating the blood platelets. Blood platelets form clots at the site of disrupted plaque due to which a coronary artery is blocked, resulting in a heart attack. Disruption of blood supply even for a few minutes causes a significant damage to the myocardium due to depletion of oxygen and nutrients. Extent of damage depends on how quickly blood flow is restored to the deprived heart tissue. Depending on the damage, death or disability occurs in a patient.

In most cases of a heart attack, it is vital to operate the patient immediately. Patients should be administered with thrombolytics such as plasminogen activator that are capable of bursting clots formed within the arteries. Once the clots burst, it is important to keep the arteries open so as to ensure a steady supply of blood. Most common surgical practices used to restore blood supply include coronary heart bypass surgery and angioplasty.
