Link Between PTSD And Heart Disease

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be defined as severe physical and emotional stress that a patient undergoes as a reaction to an extreme psychological trauma. PTSD is an anxiety disorder and its symptoms include nightmares, flashbacks, self-mortification, insomnia, loss of appetite, hyper-vigilance, memory loss, excessive startle response, clinical depression, irritability and anxiety. However, there is new evidence that associates PTSD with occurrence of future heart attacks.

A study was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Laura D. Kubzansky of the Harvard School of Public Health to find out the relation between high levels of PTSD symptoms and risk of coronary heart disease. According to results originating from this study, there is an increased risk of coronary heart disease in older patients suffering with elevated symptoms of PTSD.

The study was conducted by analyzing data of 1,946 men enrolled in Veterans Affairs (VA) Normative Aging Study. During the study, researchers have found that there is a 26 percent increased risk of coronary heart disease with each increase in symptom level.

A similar kind of study was conducted by Dr. Joseph Boscarino of The New York Academy of Medicine. Under this study, medical history and health records of 2,490 Vietnam War veterans were analyzed. According to this study, the risk of getting a heart attack is six-times higher in veterans with PTSD. The risk is even higher when the patient suffers with anxiety and depression along with PTSD. Dr. Joseph also analyzed results of 12 different studies conducted upon more than 50,000 subjects who had been exposed to one or the other kind of trauma such as war, disasters or child abuse and sexual assault.
