The cardiovascular system is responsible for taking blood, nutrients, gases, heat and ions to different organs and tissues of the body. The heart is the pump of the cardiovascular system. The heart with is pumping mechanism ends up driving blood to each organ of the body. The heart pumps blood into two pathways; namely the pulmonary pathway and the systemic pathway. The pulmonary pathway is the pumping of blood from the heart to the lungs. It is here that the blood takes in oxygen and deposits carbon dioxide. In the systemic pathway, the heart pumps blood to the remaining parts of the body. Here the blood delivers oxygen to all tissues, organs and muscles and then collects all the oxygen.

The heart is made up of four chambers which help to keep the oxygenated blood separate from deoxygenated blood. The chambers are the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. The right atrium and right ventricle are connected to the pulmonary pathway. These two chambers are the collecting point for deoxygenated blood which is sent to the lungs for oxygenation. The left atrium and left ventricle are the point where oxygenated blood enters the heart and is then pumped to the rest of the body.
