High Altitude Heart Failure

High Altitude Heart Failure

There are some people who tend to get sick at high altitudes. This is known as high altitude sickness; it also referred to as mountain sickness.

The reason for high altitude sickness is lack of oxygen. As you go higher, there is less oxygen in the air and this makes it more difficult breathe.

Due to less oxygen in the atmosphere, your blood oxygen level will decline as the altitude increases. This can be extremely dangerous for people with heart condition as there is a possibility of getting high altitude heart failure.

As it is climbing high altitude is challenging for healthy people; but for people with a heart problem it can be all the more troublesome. The way your heart reacts to high altitude depends on the height you are planning to ascend, your fitness level and the condition your heart is in.

High altitude heart failure usually happens when you have a pre-existing heart ailment. When you ascend, the level of stress hormones in your blood will increase and this causes the blood pressure to increase. As your heart already has a problem, it will be working harder than a normal heart and the additional stress due to the altitude contributes further. Your heart will be forced to worker even harder due to lack of oxygen and you might end up getting a high altitude heart failure. However, even with a heart problem you can still climb high altitude as long as you are exercising regularly and your condition is not serious.
