Prostate Cancer Survivability Rates At Stage T3c

An important part of evaluating prostate cancer is to determine at which stage the cancer exists in the human body depending on which further treatment regimen is prescribed to the patient. The most common system of determining prostate cancer stage is the four-stage TNM system, also known as Tumor/Nodes/Metastases system. According to this system, prostate cancer is divided into T1, T2, T3 and T4 stages depending on the size of the tumor, number of lymph nodes involved and presence of any metastases.

Prostate cancer is termed to have reached T3 stage when the physician is able to detect the location using digital rectal examination. In this stage, cancer extends through the capsule surrounding the organ. However, the cancer does not spread to other organs except the seminal vesicles located in the vicinity of the prostate gland. T3 stage is further divided into T3a, T3b and T3c stages. In the T3a stage, the tumor has unilateral extracapsular extension. In the T3b stage, the tumor has bilateral extracapsular extension. In the T3c stage, the tumor has invaded one or both the seminal vesicles. In this stage, the cancer is not detected in the lymph nodes or other organs located in distant areas of the body.

T3c stage of prostate cancer is also known as locally advanced stage. Treatment of the patient in this stage of cancer is possible either through surgery or radiation therapy since the location of the tumor is confined only to the area surrounding the prostate. Approximately 60 percent of the patients in this stage survive up to 5 years if treated with radiation therapy and 80 percent of the patients with surgically confined T3c stage prostate cancer end up living for 5 years after surgery.
