Symptoms Of Bone Cancer

Bone cancer can be defined as an abnormal proliferation of cells inside the bone. Bone cancer can be broadly categorized into primary bone cancer and secondary bone cancer. Primary bone cancer is the one that has its origins in the bone itself. This is a rare form of cancer with 2,400 cases being diagnosed each year in the United States. Secondary cancer is the one that originates in a different tissue such as breast, lung and prostate and spreads to bone as a result of metastasis. This is the most common type of bone cancer and is also known as multiple myeloma. Primary bone cancer is also referred to as bone sarcoma. There are three different types of bone sarcomas including osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma and Ewing’s sarcoma.

There are a variety of reasons due to which bone cancers occur. Primary bone cancers usually occur in young children and teenagers, particularly in those people who have undergone a radiation therapy or chemotherapy for other ailments. Other reasons include Pagets disease and heredity.

Bone cancer causes massive destruction of the bone tissue and the cartilage resulting in weakened or fragile bones. These sorts of bones are prone to have fractures more frequently. Breakage might occur without any apparent reason. Apart from unexplained bone fractures, other symptoms of bone cancer include persistent and acute pain and swelling. Symptoms also vary depending on the size and location of the cancer. Patients suffering with bone cancer near the joint experience problems in movement. If the cancer is in the leg, patients might develop a limp. Other common symptoms of cancer include tiredness, fatigue, weight loss, fever, sweat and loss of appetite.
