Transitional Lobe Prostate Cancer

Prostate gland is a walnut-sized organ that has a significant role in the male reproductive system and urinary system. The gland is located just below the urinary bladder surrounding the urethra like a donut. It is easy to locate a prostate gland during rectal examination. Prostate gland functions both as a gland and muscle. As a gland, the prostate produces a milky, alkaline fluid that is mixed with sperm and is ejaculated during sexual intercourse and masturbation. Prostate gland consists of an enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. As a muscle, prostate helps in driving the seminal fluid through the urethra and out of the penis during ejaculation.

Depending on its function, the prostate gland has been divided into four zones, namely transitional zone, central zone, peripheral zone and anterior fibro-muscular zone.

Peripheral zone is the major part of prostate gland occupying 70 percent of the total volume. This is the region where 70 percent of total prostate cancers originate. The next bigger region inside prostate gland is the central zone that occupies 25 percent of the volume and is the origin point of 25 percent of all prostate cancers. Transition zone is responsible for 5 percent of the total prostate volume. This zone surrounds the proximal urethra and is associated with the region of the prostate gland that grows throughout life. Transition zone is rarely associated with any kind of carcinoma. However, this zone is responsible for a disease known as benign prostatic enlargement. Anterior fibro-muscular zone is made up of only muscle and fibrous tissue. This region is devoid of any glandular region.
