History Of Skin Cancer

The chances of getting of skin cancer have developed to a very large extent in the recent years. There are large numbers of people suffering from skin cancer in the U.S. itself. The number increases further when the entire world is taken into consideration. As far as the history of skin cancer is concerned, it is not entirely well known. But one important fact about skin cancer is that it must not be considered a disease.

In Peru, several mummies have been discovered that are about 2400 years old. They are found to have skin cancer. This shows that this has not arisen recently but it has existed in history from a very long time. John Hunter, a Scottish surgeon was the first one to be operated for skin cancer in the year 1787. He himself was not sure what it actually was but he recognized that it was something risky and thus got himself operated.

The tissues taken out of his body were preserved so that they could be studied in future. When the scientists examined these tissues in the year 1968, they came to know that it was nothing but melanoma, which is a sort of skin cancer. In the year 1840, someone called Samuel Cooper too claimed that melanoma which is the most dangerous kinds of skin cancer is impossible to be treated at the later stages. This is true even today as this kind of skin cancer is still very difficult to be treated in its advanced phases. There are several precautions that may be taken to stay away from such highly dangerous skin disorders.
