There are thousands of genes that are arranged strategically on chromosomes and play a very complex role inside living organisms. In fact, functions performed by many genes in the cell are yet to be deciphered by scientists

One important function of genes is to carry messages that are converted into proteins by means of special cellular machinery. Each of these messages is used to build a specific type of protein.

The exactness of a protein that is built in the cell is entirely dependant on the message or the content of DNA present inside the gene. If the message is incorrect, it results in a faulty protein. Synthesis of a faulty protein usually occurs when the gene encoding the protein carries a single or more than one mutation in its DNA. Faulty proteins that are synthesized by mutated genes are usually dangerous leading to cellular malfunction, and even death. Unfortunately, these faulty proteins behave in an entirely different way unlike the native or the original protein synthesized by a normal gene. They might either become a toxic product and might change into a completely non-functional protein. Diseases that occur as a result of mutated genes and faulty protein synthesis form a particular kind of genetic disorders.

Some important genetic disorders that occur as a result of faulty proteins include cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and Huntington’s disease. All these three disorders contain single-gene mutations. There are also diseases where more than one mutation happens resulting in faulty protein synthesis. The most notable example is Alzheimer’s disease that occurs as a result of mutations in apoE gene.
