A genetic disorder is caused by abnormalities in the genetic framework of a person and is passed down from either parent to the children. Some genetic disorders are caused due to mutation inside one of the genes or due to the absence or presence of an entire chromosome, chromosomal aberrations, or even due to abnormal extension of the gene length. Certain genetic disorders are gender specific while others are restricted to a particular ethnic origin
Basically, there are four types of genetic disorders:
- Single Gene (Mendelian or Monogenic) disorder,
- Multi-factorial (complex or AKA polygenic) problems,
- Chromosomal Abnormalities and
- Mitochondrial Disorder.
Here is a list of the top 10 genetic disorders which are most common and prevalent world wide:

Although medical science has made so much of advancement, there are no means of preventing the occurrence of genetic disorders in your progeny. However, modern day medical technology has made it possible to test an unborn child for the presence of many genetic disorders. So, parents who suspect some genetic disorders in their unborn child (owing to their genetic make-up and family history of certain genetic disorders) can now relax because it is now possible to detect certain forms of genetic abnormality in the fetal stage (before birth) itself by using a procedure called amniocentesis .
