Till date doctors have not been able to figure out what exactly the appendix does for the body, but when it gets infected, it causes this painful condition called appendicitis, and must be attended to immediately.

Statistics show that each year, seven percent of Americans report a case of appendicitis, with more males being affected than females. Most emergency stomach surgeries performed on children are due to this condition since appendicitis is commonly reported in young people belonging to the age group 10 to 30.

Even though the appendix is benign otherwise, when infected and inflamed, it can cause plenty of damage to the body. The first sign of appendicitis in one's body is a mild stomach pain that is not based at a particular spot. The patient will feel it all over his stomach initially, and then the pain will slowly start moving to the lower right side of the belly and settle down there. Apart from this pain, there may be either diarrhea or constipation, with or without vomiting and a mild fever. Though the abdominal pain is what signifies appendicitis, may people do not experience the other symptoms like diarrhea or vomiting, and hence are unable to understand the nature of the problem. Hence, it is important to focus seriously on the pain and consult a doctor if it persists.

Appendicitis is a serious health risk is not treated immediately, and must not be ignored at any cost. Mild to moderate appendicitis is usually treated with antibiotics, while a severe case needs to be cured with surgery.
