Apple Juice And Newborn Constipation

Apple Juice And Newborn Constipation

Diagnosing constipation in a newborn is quite difficult for parents, since every infant’s body functions in a different way, and so does his or her bowel moments. To add to this, as a parent you may be aware that your baby’s bowel movement pattern can change every week, and can sometimes change even on a daily basis!

Of course the first thing you must do to fix this problem is consult your baby’s pediatrician. In the meantime, you can also do a few things at home to help ease the condition.

First, take a good look at what you are feeding your newborn. If you are bottle feeding, ensure that the formula is mixed properly, and try adding a little more water. If you are breast feeding, what you are eating is affecting the baby’s diet, so make sure you are eating healthy foods with plenty of fiber and drinking lots of water. If your baby is more than six months old, try using apple juice to get rid of constipation. Start with small dozes, and then gradually increase to 50 grams a day. You may have to mix it with some other fluids initially till the baby gets adjusted to the taste.

Most pediatricians suggest apple juice for infants to relive constipation, since it has an effective laxative effect that is gentle enough for infants. If fed apple juice twice daily, your newborn should be free from constipation, though you must allow a few days for result to show. If the baby does not want to drink apple juice, try grape or pear juice instead.
