The banana is not called known as a wonder fruit for nothing. Did you know that not only bananas can help fight constipation, they are equally good for those who are depressed, suffering anemia or are just plain hung-over? Of course these benefits are just in addition to the fact that bananas are loaded with essential nutrients like fiber, potassium and vitamins.
The funny thing is that bananas can both cause as well as cure constipation! The difference lies in the type of bananas you eat. If you are suffering from constipation, then ripe bananas are what you need to feel better, thanks to all the extra fiber and potassium in them. Even toddlers can be fed ripe bananas to relieve them of constipation, since the high fiber content helps regulate bowel movement. Also, there is an enzyme in a ripe banana that does not let fermenting happen, and thus is helpful in curing constipation.
However, if you can to cure an acute case of diarrhea, the same ripe banana is what you need to avoid. Unripe bananas are what you should eat to cure diarrhea, since they have a lot of starch and hence digesting an unripe banana takes some time. Bananas are also helpful when it comes to replacing the necessary electrolytes lost from your body because of diarrhea.
Now that we have sorted out the effects of ripe and unripe bananas on your body, eat one banana a day for all its goodness, and stick to those which are yellow skinned and not too ripe or raw.
