Foods To Alleviate Constipation

Constipation is a common problem, faced by more than twenty-five percent of all people living in the US. It is also a medical condition that is responsible for almost two million visits to the doctor in this country, every year.

Constipation is caused by a number of causes, like unhealthy food habits like a low fiber diet, very little or no fruits and green vegetables, too much of coffee, sodas and junk foods. Add to this a sedentary lifestyle without any exercise, too much stress, and it is little wonder that more and more people are suffering from this condition. Not enough water in the body is a prime cause for constipation; hence it is important that anyone who is suffering from constipation or would like to keep this ailment at bay must drink a minimum of 6 to 8 glasses of water everyday.

The American Dietetic Association recommends that an adult with this condition must make changes to his diet so that he gets 25 to 30 grams of fiber everyday. The other important step towards preventing or getting rid of constipation is to be aware of the benefits of a healthy colon, and how to look after it properly.

Regular exercise is not only good for the rest of the body; it helps keep the colon in great shape too. Walking, jogging or yoga helps regulate bowel movement and thus alleviate constipation. There are a number of prescription drugs that can cure constipation, but it is advisable that natural remedies like herbs be given a shot, before resorting to medication.
