Constipation is a common condition that people all over the world experience, especially little children and women. In some, it may be a problem due to poor food choices and dehydration, while in others it may be a side effect of a more serious disorder, like appendicitis or Crohn’s disease.
Constipation is mostly caused due to a lack of fiber in a person’s diet, too much stress, lack of regular exercise, and poor sleeping habits. Constipation comes with its own set of side effects, like fatigue, appetite loss, depressions, headache, bloating and an overall feeling of uneasiness. Though it is not a life threatening condition, constipation must be treated before it leads to more serious problems like bleeding stools or hemorrhoids.
Mild to moderate constipation can be easily cured with the help of laxatives and stool softeners, both available over the counter. However, these should be used as short term relief methods only and not long periods of time, or there could be some serious damage to the bowel or the intestines. There are a number of natural remedies that can also be tried to effectively cure constipation.
The easiest and most effective natural remedy is of course drinking lots and lots of water. Drinking a glass of warm water every morning with a dash of honey and lemon in it can work wonders to relieve constipation. Ayurveda too has a solution for constipation, in the form of triphala, which is an herb that strengthens the colon. Green leafy vegetables and grapes too are good natural remedies that can cure constipation.
