Constipation is a widespread problem that plagues both adults and children alike. It occurs due when the gastrointestinal tract does not function properly, and the causes that lead to it may range from a bad diet to diseases to the after effects of taking certain medicines.
The underlying cause of constipation is due to too absorption of water by the colon or if the muscles of the contract too slowly. These two factors cause the stools to harden and dry out, and also causes the stools to take a long time to pass through the colon.
Other prime causes of constipation are dehydration, reaction from frequent use of drugs like laxatives or diuretics, and those that treat depression, Parkinson's disease, anemia and high blood pressure. If the intestines or rectum undergo any physical changes because of the surgery or the presence of hemorrhoids or anal fissures, then that too may lead to severe constipation. A few diseases that cause constipation are thyroid, diabetes, diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel disease.
Other causes may not be due to such serious diseases but stem from lifestyle oriented causes, like bad food habits with no room for fruits, vegetables and whole grains, drinking inadequate amount of water, and lack of physical exercise. If a person’s diet does not include a minimum of twenty to thirty-five grams of fiber on a daily basis, he is likely to suffer from severe constipation. Sometimes people tend to avoid going to the toilet for long periods of time, which can lead to constipation too.
