Can You Drink Too Much Water And Get Diarrhea ?

As per figures published by the World Health Organization or WHO, roughly 3.5 million people die every year from diarrhea, and 80 percent are children below the age of 5. The reason why small children fall prey to this disorder more easily is because even slight dehydration can cause serious damage to their small bodies.

Now if you are thinking that maybe feeding them plenty of water should be able to take care of this problem, you will be mistaken. Drinking too much water also is not good for the body, since it can lead to a disorder called water intoxication, or a case of hyponatremia, which occurs when the sodium present in the body is heavily diluted.

Infants below the age of 6 six months and athletes are most susceptible to water intoxication. While babies get affected because they drink several bottles of water as well as diluted formula all through the day, athletes drink a lot of water, but it does not replace electrolytes like sodium and potassium lost due to excessive sweating, which leads to hyponatremia and water intoxication. And, when electrolytes are not replenished in the body, it can cause diarrhea. Therefore, drinking too much water can cause diarrhea in this instance.

Though the numbers are small, water poisoning can lead to death, as has been reported in both the Unites States and Canada. The dangers of water intoxication and hyponatremia also depend to some extend on the patient’s body weight, and the amount of food that is present in his system. Other factors too determine a person’s response to this condition but so far there is no proven data on them.
