E coli or traveler’s diarrhea is caused by the E. coli bacteria, usually present in food or water that has been contaminated. The developing African countries, the Middle East and Central America including the West Indies pose a greater risk of this type of diarrhea, so travelers to these places must exercise extra caution.
Sometimes the e coli bacteria may even strike on home ground, like when you eat hamburger meat that has not been cooked properly, or drink cow’s milk that has been contaminated in some way. Children who wear diapers too can contract this disease easily.
Even though raw food of all kinds carry the risk of spreading the E. coli bacteria, there are a few foods that you must be particularly careful of. Included in this dreaded list are raw meat, shellfish, all types of tropical fish, vegetables that are uncooked, fruit juice, milk and products made from milk that has not been pasteurized, and untreated water.
Children are more susceptible to this condition than adults, and typical symptoms include watery diarrhea, extremely painful stomach cramps and abdominal swelling, vomiting and nausea. Often it may so happen that a person infected with the E. coli bacteria may not be aware of it since he is unable to notice any of the above symptoms, but may inadvertently pass on the bacteria to others.
Since there are a number of other diseases that come with exactly the same symptoms as e coli diarrhea, often it is difficult to do a proper diagnosis. However, if diagnosed and treated properly, e coli diarrhea can be cured in a week’s time.
