Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder and its main symptoms are constipation, pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, cramping and bloating. It is a condition that leads to a lot of discomfort but thankfully, there is no major health complication that one has to worry about.
Most people keep a check on their condition with the help of a good diet, medication and activities that lead to better stress management. Almost twenty percent of the American population suffers from irritable bowel syndrome, and it is one of the most common causes for doctor visits in this country.
Women are more prone to be affected by this disorder than men, and fifty percent of those who suffer from this condition are affected before they reach the age of thirty-five.
There are a number of different types of treatment available for curing irritable bowel syndrome. They range from simple ones like changes in food habits and stress management to more advanced methods like prescription drugs, behavioral therapy and also alternative therapy, if required. Irritable bowel syndrome must never be handled without the supervision of a doctor, since it may then lead to complicated problems which were not there in the first place.
Doctors will advise different kinds of tests for each patient, based on his symptoms and the severity of his condition. These will include X-rays, blood examinations, testing a sample of the stools, and for more advanced diagnosis, a sigmoidoscopy, or a colonoscopy. The kind of treatment prescribed to each patient will depend on his individual test results.
