What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome ?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder of the large intestine that leads to constipation in some and diarrhea in others. Though it does not cause any serious damage to the intestines, irritable bowel syndrome can lead to extreme discomfort, with such symptoms like bloating, unusual bowel movements and pain in the abdomen.

Irritable bowel syndrome is more common in women than men, and it has often been reported after a particularly stressful event in a person’s life, like the death of a loved one, divorce, sudden loss of job or the fear of examinations. There are no proven causes, cures or specific lab tests for this condition.

Doctors usually run certain routine tests like X-rays, blood and testing the stool sample to make sure there is no other disease responsible for this condition. If the condition is quite severe then he doctor may even ask for advanced tests like a sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy.

The usual symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are stomach cramps, irregular digestion, i.e., either it is too fast or else it is too slow, gas or flatulence, backache, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, noises in the stomach, bloated Stomach, nausea, dizziness, and an overall feeling of being sick and feeling fatigued.

Sometimes these symptoms may get so intense that the person suffering from them may be unable to go about his daily activities, work or socialize. The primary way to get rid of this condition is by changing the patient’s eating habits, cutting out all foods that trigger off the symptoms and including more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
