Liver Disease And Survival Rates

The liver is the most important organ of the body as it regulates many functions of the body, and also cleans the blood.

The liver is extremely sensitive, but also a very strong organ. It is slightly bigger than a football in size and is made up of soft tissue. It takes out the impurities from the blood and ejects them out of the body, and this is one of the most important functions performed by the liver. If not for the liver, we would be getting impure blood for all the body parts. So any problem with this particular organ can cause problems in other organs too. There are quite a few common liver diseases and also some serious complications.

Diseases like jaundice that is caused due to the non-functioning of the liver are not considered life threatening, and they can be treated. People also recover from it quite easily. Liver cancer and cirrhosis are more complicated liver diseases to treat. If they have been identified in the early stages, then the doctors can treat them aggressively and bring them under control within a short period of time. However, if these diseases have advanced, then the treatment approach will be very different.

In the early stages of diseases like cirrhosis and liver cancer, the survival rate is as high as 78 percent. Even in advanced stages the survival rate is 40 percent, which is not possible with any other kind of cancer. The liver has a very good capability of recovering fast. The survival rate for liver cancer is much higher compared to breast, prostate, lungs and stomach cancers.
