Radiotherapy And Liver Cancer

Radiotherapy provides one of the options for treating liver cancer. If the doctors are able to identify the location of the tumor and if it is accessible, then they can kill the cancer cells by using radiation.

However, there are side effects to this procedure, and it often leaves the patients drained out of energy. The radiation is usually administered using two methods. The doctor will select the best method for the patient. One is the external radiation where the radiation therapy is administered by exposing the organ to the rays. These are high energy X-rays which can kill the cancer cells. Another and more complicated method is to induce a radioactive substance that is sealed in objects compatible with the body and placed near the cancer cells. This method is called internal radiation.

It has been found that for people who suffer from liver cancer radiation therapy has several side effects. After each therapy patients complain of severe fatigue, vomiting and nausea, pain, urinary discomfort and diarrhea. Drugs that are called radio sensitizers are given to the patients so that the cancer cells become more receptive to the radiation therapy. Radiation is also enabled using radioactive antibodies. These are artificially made antibodies induced into the liver. This is one of the internal radiation methods used for cure. These antibodies exactly target the cancer cells and end up killing them.

The types of treatment depend on the stage of cancer that is being treated. Treatment of cancer is possible, but there is no guarantee if it will occur again.
